Western Medicine and Philanthropy in China: The Introduction of Hospitals and Medical Schools, 1800-1950

This joint research project between Peking University Health Science Center, the Center for History of Medicine, and IUPUI Medical Humanities and the Center on Philanthropy seeks to support scholarship in China and the U.S. on the history of Western medicine in China. The goal is to identify and establish a network of scholars as participants and to identify the major archival holdings and archive directors. A workshop/conference will be held first in the U.S. and then in Beijing to discuss research, take stock of holdings and ways to improve access, and to follow up on the previous conference with more Chinese participants and to identify Chinese collections.
